Kendari: What to Do With the Night Before Your Boat

You'll spend at least one night in Kendari. Not because we're selling you one, but because our pick-up is at around 08:00 and there's no flight that gets you here in time on the morning of day one.

So this page is functional rather than aspirational. Kendari is not a holiday destination and nobody is going to pretend otherwise. It is a working provincial capital, and the useful question is how to make that night a good one rather than a wasted one.

What Kendari is

The capital of Southeast Sulawesi province, on the southeastern peninsula, built around a long natural bay. It is a port city and an administrative centre, and it is the hub through which everything in this corner of the island moves.

It is not on the tourist trail in any meaningful sense. There's no old town, no famous temple, no beach resort strip. What there is: a functioning city with good seafood, cheap transport, everything you need to buy, and almost no other foreign travellers.

Some people find that flat. Others find an evening in a normal Indonesian city more interesting than another tourist quarter. It depends on you.

Where to base yourself

We are not going to recommend specific hotels. Standards change, ownership changes, and a recommendation that goes stale is worse than none.

What matters is the geography, and there are two sensible choices.

Near the airport (Ranomeeto, South Konawe). Around 15 km from the city centre. Convenient if you land late, and it keeps the morning simple.

In the city itself. Better for food, evening life and buying things. It is where most accommodation of any quality sits.

For our pick-up, the city is generally the easier option, because the road to Tanasa Port runs north and the transfer is more straightforward from town. Tell us where you are staying when you book and we'll confirm the pick-up point rather than leaving you to guess.

Book somewhere with a genuinely early breakfast, or accept that you'll be leaving before it starts. An 08:00 pick-up means being ready at 08:00.

What to buy before you leave

This is the actual reason this page earns its place. There are no shops on the islands and no ATM. Kendari is your last chance at all of it.

A Telkomsel SIM. The network that works out on the islands. Others largely do not. Buy it at the airport or in a phone shop in town and have them set it up before you walk away.

Cash. Draw more than you think you need. There's no cash machine where you are going and card payment doesn't exist out there.

Snorkelling gear if you don't own any, since it is not included in the packages. A mask that fits your face is worth the detour.

Reef-safe sunscreen, meaning check the ingredients for oxybenzone and octinoxate rather than trusting the label.

Motion sickness tablets, if you're prone to it.

Snacks and any fruit you particularly want. Meals are included and good, but the variety is what a boat kitchen can carry.

Any medication you need. Personal medication is not included and pharmacies out there do not exist.

What to do with the evening

If you land in the afternoon and have hours to fill.

Eat seafood. This is the genuine argument for a night in Kendari. It is a port city on a bay in eastern Indonesia and the fish is excellent and inexpensive. Grilled fish with sambal is the thing to order and you don't need a restaurant recommendation to find it well made.

Walk the waterfront. The bay is the city's organising feature and the evening is when people are out along it.

The city square. Where locals gather in the evening, which is the most reliable way to see a city being itself.

Buy local craft if you want something to take home. The province is known for ironwood and teak work and for silver.

If you have a full spare day rather than an evening, Moramo Waterfall inland from the city is the province's best-known natural sight outside the islands, described by the national tourism board as a multi-tiered fall. It is a day trip rather than an afternoon.

On the way back

If your trip finishes with a night in Kendari before flying out, the same logic applies in reverse, plus one addition: this is where the first proper shower in several days happens, and it's worth booking somewhere slightly better than you would have for the outbound night.

Whether you can skip the return night and fly out the same day depends on your trip length. Ask us before booking that ticket rather than after.

Practical notes

Getting around. Taxis and ride-hailing both operate. Distances within the city are short.

Language. English is limited outside hotels. A translation app and a few words of Indonesian go a long way.

ATMs. Widely available in the city. This is the last of them.

Timing. The airport is roughly 15 km out, commonly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Build in more than you think for a morning departure.

Do I really need a night in Kendari? Yes, before the trip. Pick-up is around 08:00 and no arriving flight makes that work on the same morning.

Is it included in the package? No. Hotels before and after the trip sit outside, so you book that night yourself.

Which hotel should I book? We do not recommend specific properties. Base yourself in the city rather than by the airport if you want a decent evening, tell us where you are staying, and check that the pick-up time works with their breakfast.

Is Kendari safe? It is an ordinary Indonesian provincial city and normal city sense applies. There's nothing unusual to warn you about.

Is there anything to do if I have two nights? One evening is enough for the city. With a second full day, Moramo Waterfall inland is the main option.
