How to Get to Labengki: Kendari, Tanasa Port and the Crossing

Getting to Labengki is a chain of three legs, and only one of them is a flight. Nothing about it is difficult. What catches people out is the sequence, because each leg only connects to the next at certain times of day, and the last one answers to the sea rather than to a timetable.

Here is the whole chain, in order.

Leg one: fly to Kendari

Kendari is the gateway city, in Southeast Sulawesi. Its airport is Haluoleo (KDI), roughly 15 km outside the city at Ranomeeto.

There are no international flights into Kendari. You connect through an Indonesian hub, and Makassar is the usual one, with Jakarta and Surabaya also serving the route. If you're coming from outside Indonesia, that means at least one domestic hop after you land.

Leg two: the road north to Tanasa Port

Boats to Labengki do not leave from Kendari city. They leave from Tanasa Port, on the coast north of the city.

The drive is about 40 minutes. That figure is our own crew's, not a published one, and it's the reason the itinerary works the way it does: you're collected in Kendari at 08:00, you're at Tanasa well before nine, and the boat leaves at around 09:00.

You do not need to arrange a car, find the port, or negotiate anything at the dock. The transfer is part of every trip we run, and that's the point of including it.

Leg three: the crossing by boat

This is the leg people underestimate, and it's the one that shapes everything else.

You cannot turn up at Tanasa and buy a ticket the way you might for a ferry between larger Indonesian islands. Access is by chartered or private boat, which is why the crossing is part of a trip rather than a separate booking.

Our boats are wooden boats, which is what works in this water. The crossing takes you north-east from the mainland into the archipelago, and where exactly you land depends on which island your accommodation is on and what the sea is doing that morning.

How long the crossing takes

Two and a half hours is the normal figure. In rough sea it stretches to about three. A faster boat can do it in two, and boat speeds genuinely differ, so which one you're on changes the answer.

You'll find shorter numbers published elsewhere. They are not ours, and the honest version has a range in it, because this crossing is the part of the journey the sea has most say over.

What follows from it is that the first morning is a travel morning rather than a sightseeing one. Coming back is easier: you're usually in Kendari by around 13:00 on the last day, and the crew sets the departure time around the sea and around what time your flight leaves.

Two things are constant either way. Boats leave in the morning, which is why an evening arrival in Kendari is the norm rather than a mistake. And the crossing is open water, so on a rough morning the departure moves and the day reorganises around it.

Why you arrive the night before

Put the three legs together and the reason becomes obvious.

Your flight lands at Haluoleo. You need to be picked up in Kendari at 08:00 the following morning. Unless you've landed early enough to be confident of both the transfer and a night's sleep, the sensible plan is to fly in the day before and start fresh.

That's not padding. It's the difference between starting a boat trip rested and starting it having been awake since four. We cover where to stay in Kendari before the boat, including what's near the airport and what's worth doing with a spare evening.

The same logic applies at the other end. On the shorter trips you're back at Tanasa Port in the early afternoon, which makes an evening flight out of Kendari realistic but not something to gamble a connection on. If you have an international flight to catch, give yourself the following morning.

Getting to Sombori instead

Sombori sits across the provincial border in Central Sulawesi, and it's fair to ask whether you can reach it directly rather than through Kendari.

You can. There's an overland route from the Central Sulawesi side, through Kolonodale on the Morowali coast, and then a boat crossing from there. Almost nobody on our trips arrives that way, and the reason is arithmetic: it's a long overland leg from either Kendari or Palu before you get anywhere near a boat, and it only makes sense if Sombori is your single destination and you're already travelling in that province.

What to have sorted before you fly

A short list, in the order it matters:

Your Kendari night. Book it before you book anything on the islands. It's the leg with the least flexibility.

Cash. The islands run on generators and there is no banking infrastructure out there. Whatever you need in cash, draw it on the mainland.

A dry bag. Not optional. Everything that crosses on a boat gets wet at some point, and there are no piers at most stops, so you step off into shallow water and wade in. More on that and the rest of it in what to pack for the Labengki crossing.

What can move the plan

Two things, and both are worth knowing before you build a tight schedule around this trip.

The sea. The crossing is open water. On a rough morning the departure moves, and everything after it moves with it. Our crew makes that call, not the itinerary.

The tide. Several stops on the route are only reachable when the tide allows. That's why some days are written as a rough order rather than a fixed sequence, and why the longer trips reach more: they get more attempts at the same water.

Neither is a reason to worry. Both are reasons to leave a day of margin at the end rather than booking an onward flight the same afternoon you get back.

The short version

Fly to Kendari, ideally the day before. Sleep in the city. Get collected at 08:00, drive north to Tanasa Port, and cross by wooden boat that morning.
