Schedules change and this page will go out of date. Regional Indonesian routes are added and dropped regularly, airlines enter and leave markets, and frequencies move with the season. Treat everything below as the shape of the network rather than a timetable, and check the airline's own site before you book anything.
With that said, the shape has been fairly stable, and the shape is what you need for planning.
Route information on this page last checked 2026-07-30 and reviewed every six months by Asik Travel.
The airport
Haluoleo Airport, IATA code KDI, ICAO WAWW. It sits at Ranomeeto in South Konawe Regency, roughly 15 km from central Kendari.
It is a domestic airport with a two-storey terminal of around 15,640 square metres and a stated annual capacity of about 1.1 million passengers. The runway was extended to 2,500 metres and widened in 2011 to 2012, which is what allows narrow-body jets such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s to operate there. Renovations between 2017 and 2019 roughly doubled the waiting area and added a lounge.
None of that matters much to you except for one thing: this is a real jet airport with mainstream carriers, not a grass strip. Getting to Kendari is a normal domestic flight, which is a large part of why this trip is easier to reach than its remoteness suggests.
Who flies there
Seven carriers have been operating from Haluoleo, and the network divides cleanly into two groups.
To Jakarta (CGK): Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Pelita Air, Super Air Jet.
To Makassar (UPG): Batik Air, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air.
To Surabaya (SUB): Lion Air.
Regional, within Sulawesi and nearby: FlyJaya, serving Bone and Wakatobi, both routes opened in late 2025.
We are not publishing how often each of those flies. Frequencies change with the season and with demand, a number here would be wrong within months, and no airline schedule we could reach states them. The routes are the durable part; check the frequency yourself when you book.

The two ways in
Direct from Jakarta. Several carriers fly it and it is the simplest option if you're coming from outside Indonesia through Jakarta. Flight time is commonly quoted at around two and a half to three hours.
Via Makassar. Makassar is the hub for the whole of Sulawesi, it has the highest frequency to Kendari of any route, and it connects to far more places than Kendari does. If you're coming from Bali, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or anywhere in eastern Indonesia, routing through Makassar is usually the answer.
The practical difference is resilience rather than time. A Makassar routing gives you more flights to fall back on if something goes wrong, because there are several a day. A direct Jakarta flight that cancels leaves you with fewer options.
The timing constraint that actually matters
This is the part no other page about this region covers, and it decides your first and last day.
Our trips collect guests in Kendari at around 08:00 on day one. After that there is a road transfer north to Tanasa Port, and then the boat.
Two consequences.
You must be in Kendari the night before. There's no realistic same-day arrival that works. Hotels either side of the trip sit outside the package, so that night is yours to book. Where to stay is on where to stay in Kendari the night before.
A same-day flight out is usually fine, and tell us the time. You're normally back in Kendari at around 13:00 on the last day, and the crew sets the return departure around two things: what the sea is doing, and when your flight leaves. Give us the flight time when you book and it gets planned around.
What we would not do is book the last flight of the day and treat 13:00 as a guarantee. It's a normal arrival time, not a contractual one, and the sea gets a vote. An evening departure is comfortable. A domestic connection that then feeds an international one the same night is where it stops being worth the risk.
If you're connecting onward internationally, build in a night in Makassar or Jakarta rather than running it fine. Weather delays boats out here, and a boat that gets in late doesn't care about your flight.
The full route from the airport to the water is on timing your flight to reach Labengki.
Getting from the airport into Kendari
Roughly 15 km, and commonly described as a 30 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic. Taxis and ride-hailing both operate.
If your trip starts the following morning, tell us your flight number when you book and we'll factor it in.
The Wakatobi connection
Worth flagging for anyone planning a longer trip in this corner of Indonesia.
Kendari is the mainland gateway for Wakatobi as well as for Labengki. Wakatobi's main island, Wangi-Wangi, is served by Matahora Airport (WNI).
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which runs Matahora, scheduled service on the Kendari to Wakatobi route resumed in October 2025, operated by FlyJaya twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. The published timings were a 09:45 departure from Kendari arriving 10:45, and an 11:15 departure from Wakatobi arriving 12:15, both local time, giving roughly an hour in the air each way.
Two days a week is the number that matters for planning. Getting that wrong doesn't cost you an hour, it costs you three days. Confirm the current schedule with the airline before you commit to anything, because thin regional routes change and this one had only recently restarted when we checked.
A passenger ferry between Kendari and Wangi-Wangi is also reported to run.
If you're already going to Wakatobi, it's worth knowing you'll be passing through the airport that serves us.

Practical notes
Buy a Telkomsel SIM at the airport or in the city. It is the network that works on the islands and others largely do not.
Draw cash in Kendari. There's no ATM on the islands.
Domestic baggage allowances vary by carrier and the budget airlines here are strict about it. If you're carrying dive or camera gear, check before you get to the desk.
Soft bags, not hard cases. You'll be putting your luggage on a wooden boat and taking it off onto a beach.
Where this sits in the wider planning sequence is on how to plan a Labengki trip.
Common questions
Is there an international flight to Kendari? No. It is a domestic airport. You'll connect through Jakarta or Makassar.
Which is better, Jakarta or Makassar? Makassar has the higher frequency to Kendari and more onward connections, so it is generally the more resilient routing. Direct from Jakarta is simpler if that is where you already are.
How long is the flight from Makassar? Short, commonly quoted at around an hour.
Can I arrive on the morning of day one? No. Pick-up is around 08:00 in Kendari, so you need to be in the city the night before.
Can I fly out on the last day of the trip? Don't book a last-day flight until we've checked it against your trip length and the day's route.
Do I need to book flights before booking the trip? Enquire with us first. We'll confirm availability for your dates, and only then is there any point buying a ticket.
Are there flights from Bali? Not direct. Route through Makassar. If you're building a longer Sulawesi trip around this, see fitting Kendari into a wider Sulawesi route.
Domande frequenti
- Esiste un volo internazionale per Kendari?
- No. È un aeroporto domestico. Dovrai fare scalo a Giacarta o a Makassar.
